Artist Statement
My daughter Aquinnah was born 8 weeks prematurely. She was tiny (3 lbs 8 oz). This picture was taken on her due date and I wanted to capture how small she was. I grabbed my boots - issued by USAFA in June 1978 to illustrate her lack of size. I found it to be funny because her feet (not pictured) were disproportionately big and she used one to kick her way out.
About the Artist
Kate L Smith graduated as the eight Black woman from USAFA in the third class with women. She went on to be an Acquisition Officer. After her military service she began a Notre Dame lawyer. Her greatest accomplishment is her daughter Aquinnah.
